GUIDELINES FOR THE ACQUISTION AND DISPOSITION OF ANIMALS

Folsom's Children Zoo & Botanical Gardens- Lincoln, NE

A. Mission

The Folsom Childrens's Zoo & Botanical Gardens strives to have an impact upon present and future genereations through education by: interpreting the natural world; encouraging intereaction with the natural world; providing an enjoyable atmosphere for visitors; conserving animal and plant species; and participating in related research.

B. Criteria

1) SIZE- the species must fit the scale of the zoo.

2) DIVERSITY- the species selected will help demonstrate the widest possible taxonomic range.

3) ENDANGERED OR THREATENED STATUS- wherever possible, endangered and threatened species will be given priority over like common species.

4) EDUCATIONAL VALUE- can the species show special adaptations or help explain scientific principles.

5) APPEAL OR AVAILABILITY AT OTHER ZOOS- whenever possible, duplication of other area institutions (Pioneer Prarie Interpretative Center, Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo, Grand Island Heritage Zoo) will be avoided. Public appeal considerations include: color, size, activity, unusual, etc.

6) COST OF CARE- this does not include the cost of acquiring the animal. This is the costs related to the care and maintenanceof the animal in its natural environment.
